"The Background Singers" (unofficial title) are a recurring audio gag heard throughout the series. They appear most frequently in the earlier seasons of the series, becoming more sparse as the show continued into its later years. While mostly a non-diegetic presence, there are a handful of instances (namely the episodes Foot Burn and Oh, You Animal!) where characters seem to acknowledge their existence.

The most common application for the voices are comedic punctuation, either verbally labeling something seen on screen, or repeating dialogue from the characters in song format (usually the dialogue itself is labeling something, making the singing redundant). Less commonly, but in the same vain, the voices also often introduce various characters who appear on-screen for the first time.

Trivia[]

  • The voice actor is unknown and anything about it is unknown, although traces of Mark "Thurop" Van Orman's voice can be detected if one pays close attention...
  • It sings as a honkey-tonk choir in How the West was Fun.
  • The most notable instance of a character acknowledging the voices was in the episode, Foot Burn. When the Trolley Hag presents Flapjack with a junior trolley cap, he responds with "Wowee! I real-life official Junior Trolley Hat!" to which a masculine voice with a heavy reverb repeats in song. Due to the length of the line, Flapjack is left awkwardly waiting for the singer to finish before accepting the cap.
    • This is also notable for being the first major instance of a masculine-voiced singer in one of the gags.
